TIERRA DEL FUEGO and USHUAIAAbout 3,200 km from Buenos Aires, in Tierra del Fuego, extreme strip of land south of the American continent, is placed Ushuaia that shares with Puerto Williams a small Chilean city, the title of southernmost city of the inhabited world. PENINSULA VALDESLocated in the north-eastern area, of the region of Chubut, this vast wildlife reserve of some 4000 square kilometre, where only one small village (Puerto Piramides) is found, is the undisputed realm of whales, penguins, elephant seals and sea lions, sole and undisturbed inhabitants of that strip of wild untouched land, of great interest, not far, is found the world’s biggest natural reserve of Punta Tombo, where Magellan penguins, by the thousands, find refuge for their mating and reproduction season. BUENOS AIRESDating back to 1536, Buenos Aires had a remarkable growth, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, when it became one of the most important cities of Latin America, last to become capital among the great South American metropolis, charming with its lush parks and tree lined avenues, with an intense cultural life desplayed in its many theatres, museums and exhibition centre, with a rather interesting architecture, where historic buildings of European tradition, are often combined, with modern attractive buildings, Plaza de Mayo, is the heart of the city, where are found: the Cabildo, the Metropolitan cathedral, and the presidential palace, the famous Casa Rosada; of particular interest are some of its quarters or “barrios” as they are locally called, such as: “la boca” notorious for being the first settlement of Italian immigrants and for being the cradle of one of the city’s top soccer teams; Palermo, definitely one of the most fashionable residential area in town; Puerto Madero, new and very lively with its many night spots and restaurants, for a good meal of the best meat in the world, accompanied by a great local wine. THE GLACIERSOne of the most magnificent natural sights in the world awaits the visitor, when reaching the vast area of perpetual snow, icebergs, primeval forests, lakes and deep woods, originating from a giant ice cap at the top of the Andes from which slide 47 of the largest valley glaciers, in the rest of the world glaciers are normally found above 2.500 meter of altitude, but at the Patagonian latitude, they start sliding much lower, like 1.500 meter, arriving as low as 200 meter above sea level. Best bases, to visit and explore some of the most famous glaciers in the world, such as: Perito Moreno, Upsala, Viedma, Grey and Tyndall, are the towns of El Calafate on the shore of the Argentino lake and the town of El Chalten beneath the Fitz Roy mountain. |
